Evaluation and optimization of polling systems

چکیده
Throughout this internship report, polling systems play a central role. Polling systems are queueing systems consisting of multiple queues, attended by a single server. The server can only serve one queue at a time. Whenever the server moves from one queue to another, a stochastic, non-zero switch-over time is incurred. The server never idles; even when there are no customers waiting in the whole system the server keeps roving between queues. In the literature on these systems, often Poisson arrivals are assumed. In many applications, however, the Poisson assumption is not realistic. This motivates us to study polling models with renewal arrivals, which represent a far broader class of arrival streams. Firstly, an approximation of the complete waiting time distribution in polling systems with renewal arrivals is derived. This approximation may act as a basis for design decisions within polling systems. Secondly, polling systems with renewal arrivals and batch service are studied. Using characteristics of the obtained distributional approximation, the question is addressed how sizes of batches should be chosen in order to optimize the waiting time.

Analysis and Optimization of Polling Systems
The basic polling system is a system of multiple queues, attended to by a single server in a cyclic order. Polling systems arise naturally in the modelling of many communication, computer and production networks where several users compete for access to a common resource. Such applications also give rise to several variants of the basic polling system, like periodic polling; here the server vis...
متن کاملINTRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT OF SURROGATE MANAGEMENT FRAMEWORK FOR SOLVING OPTIMIZATION PROBLEMS
In this paper, we have outlined the surrogate management framework for optimization of expensive functions. An initial simple iterative method which we call the “Strawman” method illustrates how surrogates can be incorporated into optimization to stand in for the most expensive function. These ideas are made rigorous by incorporating them into the framework of pattern search methods. The SMF al...

Network monitoring is one of the most significant functions in network management. In order to measure network elements and services, normally a polling approach is used to help network professionals understand the state of the managed systems in real-time. Given the current rapid growing networks, the information exchanged between network nodes and a central network management system (NMS) cou...
متن کاملAn efficient computer simulation-based approach for optimization of complex polling systems with general arrival distributions
This study proposes an efficient computer simulation approach for estimation and optimization of performance measures in a polling system. A single server polling system operating under exhaustive, gated, and mixed service disciplines is developed. In this system, the arrival process is a Poisson process and service and setup times are exponentially distributed. The polling model is solved thro...

A typical polling system consists of a number of queues, attended by a single server who visits the queues in some order to render service to the customers waiting at the queues.
